Wednesday! Glorious comic book day! Check out our post to see what we’re looking forward to reading this week, and let us know what you’re picking up as well.

Our pick of the week:
664680_1ce56e14bee23edad118f7ad9247cd2947ee1684The Wicked + The Divine #9

Story: Kieron Gillen
Art: Jamie McKelvie
Colors: Matt Wilson
Publisher: Image Comics

It’s time for a private audience with Ananke, she who has protected and judged the Pantheon for thousands of years. Yes, it’s time for an interview… with an umpire. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Also: Baphomet being all goth and having a nice little mope.

  • We Can Never Go Home #1: Check out my review for this one! Gotham Academy 6 Variant
  • Jem and the Holograms #1: It’s Jem. What else do I need to say? I’m so all over this, and the art looks fantastic.
  • The Wicked + The Divine #9: Yay, I’m finally into this the way I wish I had been since the first issue!
  • Wytches #5: Man, this is one creepy book. I read the first four issues in one go and regretted it almost immediately, but it’s so well done, and the art is so fantastic, that I need to keep going. Even if some pages are totally nightmare fuel. (Yes I’m talking about you, eyeball in the neck.)
  • Gotham Academy #6: I really love this series, from the writing and characters down to the art style. I totally need to get my hands on the variant cover by Becky Cloonan, it’s the cutest thing.

  • Gotham Academy #6: With such a light week for me this week, I figure I’ll 665974_wicked-amp-divine-9-cover-bgive this book a second shot and catch up. It’s not that I disliked anything about it, but somewhere around issue 3, it fell through the cracks.
  • The Wicked + The Divine #9: I adored the last issue of this. Gillen said that it would be about as close to Phonogram as the book as gotten, and it seriously was. I’m ready for this book to get back into some more substantial plot, though, as great as the structure of #8 was. C’mon, Ananke, give with the exposition.

  • Black Hood #2: I dug the first issue, tropes and all, but I’m mostly still here because MAN I missed having a regular dose of Gaydos art in my life. This book looks so damn good.
  • Conan/Red Sonja #3: In a just world, these two would be teaming up constantly, but we don’t live in a just world, so I’ll just have to take what I can get, I suppose.
  • Red Sonja 15Altered States: Red Sonja: Noooo idea what to expect out of this, other than to say that the plot sounds exactly like that of an old issue of Marvel Team-Up where she possessed Mary Jane Watson? Whatever, here for this.
  • Red Sonja #15: Tripling down on the Sonja this week, apparently!
  • Jem and the Holograms #1: I was born too late and too Canadian to have much awareness of the cartoon, but it’s the sort of thing that always SEEMED like it would be my jam and this comic just looks boss as hell.
  • Judge Dredd Classics: The Dark Judges #3: Anything that puts more old 2000AD material in my face in an easy-to-process format is aces in my book.
  • The Walking Dead #139: Digging the book’s current groove, don’t see it lasting much longer, bring on the pain. Teenagers, man! They’re so awkward!
  • The Wicked + The Divine #9: After the beautiful, glorious weirdness of last month’s issue, I’m ready for something a little more grounded and plot-driven. Which means it’s probably gonna screw me up royally, hooray!
  • Nightcrawler #12: Man, am I gonna miss this book. Fun, feel-good superhero action rooted in continuity is such a rarety these days. Also, this seems like as good a place as any to point out that it is going to be tacky as hell if Marvel doesn’t give Chris Claremont a wacky AU Secret Wars title to romp around in this summer when most of the X-Men books they’ll be putting out are based on stories he wrote. Just SUPER gauche, guys.

  • Jem And The Holograms #1: This has been getting good buzz, and I’m frankly more interested in it than the movie they’re doing; chalk it up to the latter being made by all Jem & the Holograms 1dudes and this one by ladies, or maybe even just to the bright, vivacious art. Whichever! Insert your own Jem theme tune joke here. No, please. I can’t do it, I have no memory of the cartoon. So we’ll also see if this one works without nostalgia, I guess!
  • New Avengers #32: Second to last issue of New Avengers, which means time is running out (haha see what I did there) for y’all who haven’t been reading to catch up. You should. You really should.
  • The Wicked + The Divine #9: Likely to be less psychedelic and odd- actually, you know what, who knows. Maybe it’ll be all talk, maybe it’ll be explosions, who can tell with this comic. But Ananke’ll do something other than break our hearts in this one, presumably. (Haha who’m I kidding that’ll probably happen anyway.)

  • New Avengers 32Batman and Robin #40: So sad to see this book coming to an end. I’ll be sure to follow Damian in his relaunched titles, but this creative team was dynamite.
  • Daredevil #14: I’m an issue behind, if I recall correctly, but that just means I get twice the Waid/Samnee action in one shot.
  • New Avengers #32: At this point, there’ve been so many INSANE twists, I have no idea how Hickman’s gonna top himself.
